| | Michelle Soltan Ghostine, MD Michelle is from Riverside, Calif. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of California-San Diego in 2002 and her medical degree from Weill Medical College of Cornell University in 2006. She is currently a resident in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. |
| | Carolyn Goh, MD Carolyn was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in comparative studies in race and ethnicity and a minor in human biology. She then worked as a data manager for Quintiles Late Phase in San Francisco before completing her medical school training at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. She completed her internship in internal medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and is currently a dermatology resident at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. Outside of work Carolyn enjoys cooking, dancing, and traveling with her husband. |
| | Melinda Graber, MD Melinda completed her undergraduate education at Middlebury College in the beautiful mountains of Vermont. After college she moved back to her home town to study medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed her emergency medicine residency at University of Chicago and is now working at a busy ER in the Chicago suburbs. In her free time Melinda loves to travel, rock climb, and spend time with her family in Chicago. |
| | Corryn Greenwood, MD Born and raised on Chicago's South Side, Corryn traveled to Ripon, Wis., to earn her undergraduate degree in chemistry/biology. She earned her medical degree at Loyola University Chicago, where she discovered her passion for very ill neonates and congenital heart disease. Corryn completed her pediatric residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and is now at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital for a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Outside of the hospital Corryn can be found golfing, bicycling with her husband Nick, or playing the viola in the local chamber symphony. |
| | Simi Gupta, MD Simi grew up in Memphis and graduated from Rice University with a double major in sociology and biology. She completed medical school at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. She is currently a resident in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Houston Memorial Hermann Program. In her free time Simi enjoys traveling, food, and reading. |
| | Peter W. Henderson, MD Peter is a general surgery resident at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Originally from Seattle, he completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, then completed his medical degree at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. In addition to his clinical work, ongoing tissue engineering research, and involvement with a surgical device and medical informatics company, Peter is currently studying for his MBA at New York University. |

He graduated medical school from his home state of Arizona and decided to come to Pennsylvania to investigate this thing called "snow." | | Diane N. McNally, MD Diane grew up in central Connecticut. She graduated from Princeton University, where she studied molecular biology. She went on earn her medical degree at the University of Connecticut Medical School. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and is currently a hospitalist. Diane lives in Boston with her husband and her black lab, Libby. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, traveling, and skiing. |
| | Maria Master, JD, MD Maria holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Columbia University, a law degree (Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar) from Columbia Law School, and a medical degree with honors in research from Weill Medical College of Cornell University. She is a former vice president and corporate counsel of Prudential Financial, Inc., and a former financial and economic analyst for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. She trained in anesthesiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical center and recently began a residency in psychiatry at this institution. Maria also serves on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Law and Education Empowerment Project. For fun, she enjoys snowboarding, rock climbing, and endless summers at the shore. |
| | Matthew W. Parker, MD Matthew grew up near Atlanta and went to college at Boston University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. He earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Matthew completed a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and is undergoing subspecialty training in cardiology here. He loves all music, especially Bach, and is trying to eat in every Zagat-rated Boston restaurant at least once. |

Portnof, DMD, MD Jason is a fellow in pediatric maxillofacial surgery/craniomaxillofacial surgery in the department of plastic and maxillofacial surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He completed his undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis and earned his doctorate in dental medicine from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Jason completed his medical school training at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He then completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an internship in general surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Jason’s interests include the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on correction of dentofacial deformities, orthognathic and maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, temporomandibular joint reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial pathology, and complex dental implantology. |

| | Valerie G. Press, MD, MPH Valerie earned both her medical degree and master of public health degree from the University of Michigan in 2004. She completed her residency in internal medicine-pediatrics at the University of Chicago Medical Center in June 2008. Valerie is currently a research fellow with the Hospitalist Scholars Program at the University of Chicago Medical Center, focusing on asthma education and health literacy. |
| | Yuri B. Pride, MD Yuri grew up in Concord, N.H., and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He worked in a basic science laboratory studying chronic myelogenous leukemia while earning a masters degree in medical sciences at Boston University. He earned his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine. Yuri completed his residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and is pursuing a cardiology fellowship at the same institution. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his two children and watching sports of nearly any kind. |

| | Amy E. Schmidt, MD Amy is a native Texan and attended The University of Texas at Austin, where she majored in biology. She earned her medical degree at The University of Texas at Houston Health Science Center, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha chapter. She started a residency in orthopedic surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University, but quickly fell in love with emergency medicine. After completing a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center, she is now an associate professor of emergency medicine at The University of Texas at Houston. In her free time Amy enjoys playing with her dog and spending time with her friends and family. |
| | Anita Vanka, MD Anita grew up in Champaign, Ill., and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular and integrative physiology and a minor in chemistry. She then attended medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago and graduated in 2005 with honors. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston in 2008 has joined the hospitalist group at BIDMC. | | Tanya G. Weinstock, MD Tanya grew up in Rhode Island and attended Yale University, majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology. She then moved to Boston, where she attended Boston University School of Medicine for her masters and medical degrees. She completed an internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and has begun a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine. |
| Associate Authors | Lanna Cheuck, MD Lanna was born in New York City as a first-generation Chinese-American. She attended Stony Brook University, where she studied premedical sciences until she began a physician assistant program at the New York Institute of Technology. While in the program Lanna decided to pursue medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine; there she served as a fellow in anatomical sciences and spent an extra year teaching anatomy. She completed her general surgery internship at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and will soon complete a urologic surgery residency at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. In her spare time Lanna enjoys dancing salsa and other Latin dances. She is fluent in Chinese and Spanish. |
| | John Szumowski, MD, MPH John was born in Springfield, Mass., and grew up in Western Massachusetts. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Haverford College. He subsequently graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, and is currently a medical resident at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. | | Rafael Vazquez, MD Rafael was born in Mexico and immigrated to Newburgh, N.Y., early in his childhood. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Mount Saint Mary College, and he earned his medical degree from Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He completed his medicine internship at New York Downtown Hospital in Manhattan and is currently an anesthesia resident at Massachusetts General Hospital.
